The official package-management documentation shows that OpenWrt is not merely a fixed image with a few toggles. It is a platform where software can be managed more deliberately. The docs also reflect a living project reality: OpenWrt 24.10 and older used opkg, while OpenWrt 25.12 and newer uses apk. That detail is small, but it says something larger. The platform is active, evolving, and still being modernized.
That kind of maintenance story matters to me more than marketing claims about “AI mesh acceleration” or other vague product language. A budget router with honest firmware, recoverability, and a living software ecosystem can be more valuable than a shinier box whose software future is already emotionally over.
Where cheap OpenWrt hardware still stops making sense
I do not want to romanticize the budget angle too much.
There are clear cases where a cheap router is still the wrong platform:
- your main WAN edge needs strong modern VPN performance;
- you want heavy IDS/IPS features;
- the box must handle many VLANs, advanced shaping, and high throughput all at once;
- the device is too old or too constrained for current secure OpenWrt expectations;

This is why I think the phrase “OpenWrt on budget routers” should not secretly mean “buy the cheapest thing you can find and hope firmware saves it.” The better reading is:
choose inexpensive hardware that is still sane for current OpenWrt;
assign it a role that fits its limits;
let the firmware bring clarity and flexibility where stock software would have narrowed the device too early.
That is a much healthier model.
I trust honest cheap hardware more than dishonest premium hardware
This might be the deepest reason I still like the idea.
Once I understood that a modest router running OpenWrt could be:
- documented;
- recoverable;
- package-aware;
- supportable through a real hardware table;
- role-focused instead of marketing-focused;
I found myself respecting cheap hardware more, not less.
Not all of it. Only the kind that is still modern enough to deserve the effort.
